EV Charger Installation Training Requirements
The electric vehicle industry is a new market that is currently in expansion across the world, especially in Australia. As more and more electric cars hit the roads across the country, the more electric vehicle (EV) owners are going to need EV charging stations installed at home. Businesses with EV fleets are also beginning to be in high demand for reliable EV charging station installations. As this market continues to grow, there is and will be an imminent need for EV charger installers.
Learning the steps to become a knowledgeable and certified EV charger installer will give you a valuable spot in an industry that will be growing in the years to come and will allow you to install single-phase EV charger solutions such as the Wallbox Pulsar Plus or valuable three-phase solutions such as the Zappi EV chargers.
What Does An Electric Vehicle Charger Installer Do?
The job of an electric vehicle charger installer is to make sure that all electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE) is installed, commissioned and maintained properly and safely. This can involve residential or commercial scale projects. Although requirements from different companies may vary, the most important fact is to have experience in electrical work.
How Can I Become an EV Charger Installer?
A-Grade Electrician Certification
The first and most important step to become an EV charger installer is to become a licensed A-grade electrician. This guarantees and provides a reference to potential customers that you are a fully qualified electrical professional that can comply with the highest standards on electrical safety. In order to obtain this licence you must complete an apprenticeship and obtain a certificate from a recognised institution in Australia. This can generally take four years to complete.
Registered Electrical Contractor’s Licence
Now in order to do contracting work for electrical companies, you will need to obtain your Registered Electrical Contractor’s Licence (REC). A single person or a company (in case that you want to run your own business) can request this licence. Keep in mind that in case you want to obtain the REC licence through a company, then you will also need to have an Australian Business Number (ABN), which properly identifies your business for tax and legal purposes. Depending on your current annual gross income, you may also need to get a Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration.
Public Liability Insurance
Finally, keep in mind that in order to obtain the REC licence, you will need to have a public liability insurance that has a minimum cover of $5 million against injury and/or damage to property related to electrical contracting work.
