The VW ID.4 is a battery-electric SUV from Volkswagen, originally launched in 2021. At 4.58 metres, it is similar in length to the Tiguan.
After the ID.3, it is the second production EV from Volkswagen based on the MEB platform developed by the VW Group and its subsidiaries. MEB means Modular E-Drive Toolkit (Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten in German) and it is the platform VW is going to use as the base of most of their future electric models. It can support up to 12 modules of battery, and by using it, VW can stretch the wheelbase according to the model. For Volkswagen, this platform will be essential for their big e-mobility revolution.
Just like the ID.3, the rear-wheel drive variants have a synchronous electric motor installed on the rear axle with an output of 109 kW / 148 hp (VW ID.4 Pure) up to 128 kW / 172 hp (VW ID.4 Pro). However, all versions of the VW ID.4 are electronically limited to 160 km/h maximum speed.
VW specifies the range for the ID.4 Pro with 82 kWh battery as 513 kilometres according to the Worldwide Light Vehicle Test Procedures (WLTP). Alternatively, a 55 kWh battery is available in the ID.4’s Pure version and it can manage 341 kilometres of range.
The ID.4 supports charging via a Type 2 connection with a maximum of 11 kW AC charging, and DC fast charging via a CCS connection. Fast charging with 50 kW is possible as standard, and 125 kW is also available as an option. In spring 2021, right after the launch, the ID.4 was tested for vehicle safety by Euro NCAP and it received five stars out of possible five.
